It was about two years ago, when KATULAD shocked the Cabanatuan music scene with their performance at Rock Nueva Ecija’s “Tunog Malaya” at Freedom Park. I can clearly remember how their set sent shiver through my spine, the moment they entered the stage was sublime. 7 skilled locals, who were well-known musicians, emerged into one equilibrium of sound. Composed of former members from Rippin Monkeyz, 7th Skool, Halloween Inc., Joint, the new ensemble formed a unique, worldly, overpowering flavor into a Cabanatuan-Nueva Ecija scene. Imagine your favorite heroes banding together, they were all-star, they were awesome and as we say it – the exact word to define their chemistry: they were “mismo”. Katulad was not just the usual heavy-riffs, screaming and powerful drumbeats, they added an ethnic element and melded rock with hip hop, and had thoughtful well rounded lyrics that made their originals different.
KATULAD describes their sound as ‘Musikang Malaya’, a term they used to express their belief that the confines of music and sound are limitless. Roots, Ethnic, Rock, HipHop and World music are their major influences of the 7-piece group.
BIGGEST BREAK 2012
It was not a surprise for us that KATULAD was qualified as one of the RedHorse Pambansang Muziklaban Finalists in 2012. For them, it was one of the best opportunities to play to one of the biggest crowds in their lives alongside the country’s top bands in the industry. Although they didn’t win, most Novo Ecijano’s are proud of them and knew that they nailed it that night, and played their hearts out. Overwhelming support for these promising musicians pour out continuously every time they own the stage.
2014, heartbreaking news broke out. KATULAD will be having their last farewell gig. “Ang Huling Indak” produced by Radyo Bandido will be the bands last gig until further notice. Don’t miss this last chance to watch them as a whole this coming January 11th, at Daddy’s Music Bar, Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija.
Below is a short interview by our correspondent Ashlee Mendoza.
How was the band formed and who is the man behind this?
Hands down. Dave!
What is your approach when it comes to songwriting?
Dave will always come up with his lyrics along with the melody, eh di sya masyado marunong maguitar. So punta sya sa bahay parininig sa amin then lalapatan na lang. Una ang kanta bago gitara.
What was the real concept behind Katulad?
At first we were not really thinking of one. We are like ‘Let the chips fall wherever they may’ but as time goes by mejo nakita na namin yung identity namin, so masabi ko siguro one of the real concept of katulad is to enjoy and accept difference. Makita nyo si Dave, hiphop, Gid – Metal, Paul – Industrial Rock, Andrew – Blues. Wala kami napagkakasunduan na tugtugin so sa Katulad lang kami nagkatagpotagpo!
How does the band bond?
Dahil nga lahat kami eh mga daddy na. Mejo di na kami nakakapagsamsama. Pag may practice and gig lang, so masasabi ko siguro na tuwing gig ang aming bonding by getting loud and crazy!
How was the band when Cepi died?
We are all devastated by his loss, He’s a very talented Drummer/Percussionist. Mataas na respeto para sa kanya. pero sabi nga ‘the show must go on’. So until now isa pa din si Cepi sa mga inspirasyon ng Katulad
Do you guys have arguments?
pagnagkakapikunan sa gaguhan!
What was your best gig to date?
I dunno how to answer this, la ako masyado marecall, pero siguro the worst could be that gig, but di ko na sabihin kung san at kailan. Di kami nakatugtog!
Most unforgettable moment as a whole?
Our muziklaban experience. Parang naging Binaata ulit kami, malaya at malayo!
Plans after “Ang Huling Indak?”
Katulad will be signing off muna, we do not plan of replacing Dave as vocals. So siguro pagbalik nya posibble na mabuo ulit. As long as the members are still intact while dave is abroad, malaki ang chance na magbalik ulit…but syempre kelangan muna bumalik si Dave.
Dave Gualberto – Vox, Allan Teneza – Bass, Andrew Sardillo – Guitar ,Paul Tumaliuan- Guitar, Dan Caling – Percussion, Gudo Dela Cruz – Percussion, Gid Reyes – Drums
Marlon Reyes – Guitar, Cepi Torralba – Drums
Some bands are sad to hear of Katulad’s premature departure from the scene, here’s a few words from them.
Pak U! – Jhunter Alejandro/Light of Luna
Dave, Salamats sa pagkakaibigan. Sa inspirasyon. Sa supporta since eversince haha. No goodbyes brothers! Just see you laters. Mabuhay kayo! – Jam Bumanlag/Even
